Essences > The Evolution of Ashwhin Flower Remedies
The roots of the story
I have had a special relationship with plants and growing them since I was encouraged to grow my first seeds by Calvin at the age of four.
From that time onwards, I have always felt happiest when I was surrounded by plants - house plants, herbs, and especially wonderful wild places to walk beneath the trees.
By age 14, I was involved in a local movement for re-cycling, and by 17, I was part of an environmental group petitioning for change. Also, in my teens, I became interested in using herbs for cooking and health.
Learning times
Once I moved to the UK, my interest was fired by the wealth of plant lore and tradition that is alive and well here. This nation of gardeners and plant enthusiasts encouraged me to learn the Latin names of the plants and trees I grew, and to develop an understanding of the needs and requirements of different plants.
I was charmed by the traditions of walled gardens, and completely captivated with herbs . This fascination took form in extensive reading to discover the oldest meanings and uses of familiar and exotic plants. And of course my obsession was confirmed for life once I had my own garden.
Ashwhin
The garden here at Dunstaffnage Mains farm is truly ancient, though it was largely used as an orchard and vegetable patch for the family in the early years.
We have taken great joy in planting a wonderful range of trees and shrubs to provide a perfect habitat for wildlife, a more protected ecosystem for our unusual plants and of course a lovely place to enjoy - for ourselves and our visitors.
It was only after our business was established that we decided to produce our own flower remedies, as a complement to the activities and therapies offered at Ashwhin. The time was right, and the place is perfect, and every single plant we have used can be found in our own garden or at the edge of the sea on this marvellous wee peninsula that houses Dunstaffnage castle.
